Head on out of Cancun to begin your journey of adventure and discovery with a visit to Chichén Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best preserved of all the archaeological sites in Mexico; the perfect start to your Mexican odyssey! Be awed by the iconic El Castillo pyramid and take a glimpse into the Mayan past as you learn about the Great Ball Court and its bloody history. Next you’ll make your way to the beautiful city of Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán. Explore the many shops and museums of this charming city, hang out in the Zócalo (Main Square) and eat local food such as Cochinita Pibil (slow-roasted marinated pork). Head out for your first night with your new amigos and mingle with the locals – descendants of the Maya whose culture is laced with Spanish influence.
Please note: it is possible that you will overnight in Itzamal during busy periods.
Day 2. Uxmal – Campeche
Travel to the UNESCO ruins of Uxmal for an included visit, where intricately carved temple facades pay homage to Chac, the Mayan rain god. The Uxmal archaeological site is a wonderful balance of jungle and wide open spaces and is an absolute gem, with fewer travellers than other ruins in Mexico. Drive on to the city of Campeche, the only coastal walled city in the ‘New World’, and explore the remnants of its colourful past. Why not start your visit with a walk along the Malecón, a path along the sea facing the sparkling Gulf of Mexico? On your walk you’ll find rusty cannons which once defended the city, see some of the old colonial buildings and have the opportunity to try one of Campeche’s many seafood specialities caught directly from the surrounding seas – perfect!
Day 3-4. Palenque
Continue down the ancient Mayan trade route to the ruins of Palenque. See temples lost in the jungle for hundreds of years and marvel at the magnificent pyramid known as the Temple of the Inscriptions. Enjoy an included guided jungle tour to learn about this unique ecosystem, its rare plant life, tropical birds and animals. After such an adventurous day, end with a visit to the Misol Ha waterfall and cool off with a heavy misting from the pounding water.
Day 5. Bacalar
Cross the Yucatán peninsula for a night on the shores of the beautiful ‘Lagoon of Seven Colours’ at Bacalar, which appears to change colour at sunrise and sunset. Enjoy an included scenic cruise to take in the views, before a refreshing swim in the Cenote Azul (blue cave). Laguna Bacalar is one of the most unique freshwater lakes on earth, with its varying shades of turquoise and blue, and its beautiful setting surrounded by jungle and loads of wildlife.
Day 6-7. Mahahual
Head to Mahahual on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, a small but popular beach town. Mahahual boasts white powdery beaches, great bars and an awesome atmosphere. Because it’s still a little out of the way, Mahahual retains a more authentic feel than the larger beach hotspots and has less big commercial development. Nearby is Banco Chinchorro, Mexico’s largest coral atoll and underwater paradise, where you can take to the water, swim around and check out the sea life. The warm coastal breezes make for hot days and even hotter nights dancing at the many bars and beach clubs.
Day 8. Tulum – Playa Del Carmen
En route to Playa del Carmen, explore the coastal ruins of Tulum, the only Mayan city built by the coast, before continuing to the beach resort of Playa del Carmen. Enjoy some downtime in one of the trendiest places on the Yucatán peninsula, or depending on the time of season you could take a boat trip to see whale sharks. Make the most of the warm nights and dance the night away in the many bars and beach clubs. For something a little more relaxing, find a quiet bar and watch a fire dance show or just enjoy a refreshing drink with your group.
Day 9. Playa Del Carmen – Cancun
After a final morning relaxing on palm fringed sugar white beaches, and squeezing in some last minute souvenir shopping or people watching on the Mayan Riviera, it’s time to say adios to your new amigos as you arrive in Cancun for the end of your tour.
